Patterned wood floors have made a serious comeback, and for good reason. What's the Actual Difference?

Both patterns are made from rectangular planks arranged at angles, but the geometry is different in a key way.

Herringbone arranges planks at 90-degree angles to each other. Each plank ends flush at the midpoint of the adjacent plank, creating a distinctive broken zigzag. The pattern looks like the bones of a herring fish, the source of its name. Because the planks are square-cut on both ends, standard flooring boards can be used.

Chevron creates the same V-shape movement as herringbone, but the planks are cut at an angle on each end (typically 45 degrees) so they meet at a perfect point. This creates a continuous, unbroken V pattern, cleaner and more graphic than herringbone. Chevron requires specially milled boards with angled ends, which adds to material and manufacturing costs.
